Japanese exchange coordinator visits Holyoke
Japanese culture has been welcomed into the home of the Jelden family of Holyoke. Mayumi Okada is visiting the United States as a chaperone for 12 Japanese exchange students currently staying with families throughout Colorado for the summer. The Jelden family is hosting Okada during her stay. Language Research Foundation (LEX) is an international exchange program which coordinates the placement of middle school aged children with families here in the United States for a period of 3-4 weeks during the summer as a way of introducing the students to a new culture and different way of life.

Domestic violence help expands
Victims of domestic violence now have additional support in Holyoke. Several weeks ago Judy McFadden, director of Phillips County Department of Social Services, had a discussion with Nicki Johnson, Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Help for Abused Partners about domestic violence support in Phillips County. Help for Abused Partners is based in Logan County and has always covered both the Phillips and Sedgwick county areas. The program's mission is to "assist families seeking alternatives to violence in their home." All assistance is both free and confidential and includes a crisis line for understanding, help, information, assistance and referrals; counseling and advocacy for victims of past and/or present domestic violence.

New school website offers more features
Moving along with the times, Holyoke School District Re-1J has created a new website which allows for more interaction between the schools and community, and gives parents more opportunities to monitor their children's educations. The new website can be viewed at http://holyoke.schoolfusion.us. Typing in this url will take users to the district's homepage. From there, they have their choice of several links, including connections to the elementary school, jr/sr high school, board of education and district leadership team.

Holyoke native parades 1948 Harley
Lloyd Ensminger of Haxtun recently made the trip to Sturgis, where he was honored, being asked to do a lap on the newly reopened half-mile track. At 93 years old, Ensminger did so on the 1948 Harley WR that he raced on when he was younger. He wore his original leather pants, helmet, goggles and boots and a replica of his jersey given to him by his daughter Margo Sauder and her family for Christmas.

Face painting
Face painting was one of the many treats available for kids at the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce sponsored Culpepper and Merriweather Circus at the Phillips County Fairgrounds Saturday, Aug. 16. Rowan Deslauriers is pictured being painted by one of the performers during intermission. Lions and tigers started the show, and birds rounded out the animal portion. Additionally, a clown made several appearances, and for a price you could witness "the strangest thing you'll ever see."

Circus comes to Holyoke
The audience was amazed by circus performers as they juggled everything from balls to knives to fire. This duo performed a humorous exchange that had the whole tent laughing. Other breathtaking acts included unicycle riding and a trapeze artist. -Enterprise photo
