Written by Kyle Arnoldy

HHS Dragon basketball players could not have asked for a better start to 2014 as they returned from break and quickly got back into the groove of the basketball season.

Holyoke improved to 5-3 last week with wins over Wiggins Tuesday, Jan. 7, Chase County, Neb., Friday, Jan. 10 and Burlington Saturday, Jan. 11.

Coming back from break, coach Scott Dille said he wasn’t sure what to expect in Tuesday night’s game. The first outing after a break tends to be a bit sloppy, but he said he was surprised by how crisp the Dragons played.

HHS set the pace of the game early with Wiggins, outscoring the visiting squad 13-8 in the first quarter.

“I thought the defense played well and the ball movement was pretty good with Wiggins,” Dille said.

As the first half came to a close, Dille noted that Holyoke went into cruise mode, enabling Wiggins to string together a series of baskets. At the break, Holyoke held on to a 30-23 lead.

Tito Fierro wreaked havoc on the Tiger defense in the first half, scoring 15 points before intermission.

The third period proved to be the nail in the coffin for Wiggins as Holyoke put together a 23-point quarter. Holyoke wore the Tigers out on defense, and on occasion when the Dragons gave up a bucket, they quickly got the ball in and pushed down the court for transition opportunities.
