Sarah Heermann of Holyoke earned State Champion honors in Western Division of Level II for 16-18-year-olds at the Colorado State Fair Aug. 28-30 in Pueblo.
Heermann, 16, a junior at HHS, competed in 17 classes and placed in 16 of them in the late-August State Fair competition.
In addition to winning the western division, Heermann placed third in both the gymkhana and working ranch horse divisions, as well as ninth in the English division.
In Western Division, Heermann’s rankings included first in written test, third in horsemanship, fourth in showmanship and eighth in trail to earn her first overall.
In Gymkhana, she took second in written test, fourth in barrel race, fifth in flags and eighth in pole bending to capture third overall.
In Working Ranch Horse, she placed third in ranch trail, fourth in written test, fifth in ranch horsemanship and sixth in individual cow work to place third overall.
In English Division, she placed fourth in written test, eighth in English equitation, 10th in English show hack and 10th in English riding control to take ninth overall.
Combining English, Western and Gymkhana Divisions, and competing against all Level IIs, ages 8-18, Heermann ranked seventh overall. Competing with all Level IIs (ages 8-18) in Working Ranch Horse, Heermann finished eighth overall.
For her English, Western and Working Ranch Horse competition, Heermann rode Dun By Whiskey, while her horse for Gymkhana events was Kid Cat Rio.
Heermann is an eight-year member of Challengers 4-H Club and will be crowned Phillips County Fair Queen at the Haxtun Corn Festival on Sept. 26. She is the daughter of Eldon and Christine Heermann of Holyoke.
