Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Trinity Lutheran Church, 7th Avenue and Clark Street in Sterling, is hosting the Good Shepherd Fair Saturday, Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A brunch will be available, and the craft fair bonanza will feature baked goods, jams and jellies and crafts of all kinds. All proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Communities of Colorado (GSC).

Crafts will include baby items, bed and bath items, candles, fancy work, kitchen and pantry items, pillows and quilts, dry plant and flower arrangements and more. There will be a special table for Thanksgiving and Christmas items and an “On the Creative Side” table for those who inspire something new. There will also be some special silent auction items.

Good Shepherd Communities currently supports 2,000 developmentally disabled individuals in 14 states and four foreign countries. In Colorado, GSC offers a continuum of care through a variety of ever expanding programs and services for approximately 160 children and adults in the Fort Collins, Littleton and the Denver metro area.

These Christ-centered homes were started in 1956 by a couple who was concerned about what would happen to their son with Down Syndrome when they died.

A range of services responds to unique needs in each region. Community members can be in long term care, independent living environment or supported living environment. They are provided with mental and physical care, vocational skills and social development. Residents live in a family environment, and clients are encouraged to be an active participant in community and home life.

Good Shepherd Communities serve individuals of all race and all religions, and staff work very hard to help these individuals worship at the church of their choice. There is a great need for these facilities, as there are over 3,700 individuals with developmental disabilities waiting for services. GSC has recently been given permission by the State of Colorado to purchase additional property and expand to serve additional clients.

This annual event is held each year in one of 10 northeastern Colorado Lutheran churches who participate in raising funds for the Good Shepherd Communities. All are welcome at the fair. For more information, contatct Betty Brunner at 522-2728.
