HHS Lady Dragon varsity basketball welcomed their 2009 season with a busy weekend of competition Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5. The team fought hard and came from behind for a win over Idalia in Friday’s season opener, but could not come up with a win on their home court against Wray Saturday.

Holyoke 57, Idalia 51

Winning over Idalia 57-51, coach Arlan Scholl noted the varsity girls showed great poise and determination in the game Friday night.

Determination is certainly what was needed to come back in the second half after Idalia had a 13-point lead over the Dragons at halftime. “After being down in the first half, they fought back to bring home the victory against Idalia,” said Scholl. “I was proud of the way the girls fought through to the victory.”

He said Holyoke struggled a little with shooting, but continued to push the ball and attack the basket. The Dragons outscored Idalia 20-12 in the third quarter and 19-8 in the fourth.

Marissa Smith led Holyoke scoring with 27 points. She scored 22 points in the second half alone, including five three-point shots. Nora Roth earned the team 13 points.

Molly Fricke and Marci Vasa came away with eight rebounds.Smith had six steals in Friday’s game, and Vasa totaled seven assists.

Holyoke shot 23 for 68 at 33.8 percent accuracy while Idalia made 23 out of 60 for 38.3 percent.

Holyoke 42, Wray 53

“We played very hard against the highly ranked and defending state champion team of Wray on Saturday,” said Scholl. He said the Dragons kept the game close throughout, but missed some key shots down the stretch and could not come up with the win, losing 42-53.

HHS was only down by three points at halftime, but the Eagles outscored them 25-17 in the second half for the 11-point lead at the buzzer.

“The girls worked very hard and came very close to getting the win,” said Scholl. He noted they will play Wray again later in the season for the district seeding game.

Leading the Dragon scoring was Smith with 17 points including three three-pointers, three two-point baskets and two for two from the line. Laura Gerk scored 15 points, including two three-point shots.

Wray’s field goal percentage topped Holyoke at 23 for 66 at 34.8 percent while HHS shot 16 for 59 at 27.1 percent.
