Harvest wraps up PDF Print E-mail

Snow delayed corn harvest this year, but it hasn’t completely shut everyone down.

Steve Young of Grainland Coop said harvest was about 95 percent complete as of Monday, Dec. 14.

Recent snowfall halted the final stages, but farmers were back in the field Monday, according to Young. He estimated there were around eight people in the area with corn left in the field.

Toward the beginning of harvest, corn was coming in wetter than normal. Young said they have seen the moisture come down since the beginning.

Young estimated things would be pretty much wrapped up toward the end of the week or by the beginning of next week.

Sugar beets in high demand

Sugar beet farmers in northern Colorado could see earnings double this year because of a good harvest and stronger demand, according to an Associated Press article.

Mike Otto of the Western Sugar Cooperative said about 39,700 acres of sugar beets were harvested in northern Colorado this fall which is up 25 percent from a year ago.

Storms wiped out much of the crop in India which has increased the demand, according to the same article.
