240. That’s the number of days this loyal college football fan has to wait until the next college football game.
Bowl season is over. 34 games in 17 days. One big holiday of sorts.
No more Saturday football games, no more College GameDay, no more waking up anticipating a full day of excitement.
Bowl season is one of the greatest times of the year. Not only are there 34 football games being played, Christmas and New Year’s fall within that time as well. Family and friends come together to celebrate the holiday season. Mothers sit and watch while husbands, sons, daughters and other family members glue their eyeballs to the television screen.
Thursday’s BCS National Championship wraps up the 34-game run. Some people argue a playoff system should be incorporated within the college football world. I agree with these people.
Boise State held on to beat TCU Monday, Jan. 4 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Broncos went 14-0 this season and probably won’t even be considered as No. 1. Texas and Alabama play for that top spot.
The BCS has been in place since the 1998 season and there has always been some kind of controversy. Many people want to see a playoff system used so the real National Champion can be crowned each year. We will just have to wait and see.
My beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers went out with a bang beating Arizona 33-0 in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. That was an awesome site considering our offense didn’t have a clue what an end zone looked like all year long. We lose a fantastic defensive lineman in Ndamukong Suh. Many project him as the No. 1 draft pick in the 2010 NFL draft.
That would mean he would end up playing for the St. Louis Rams as they finished with a 1-15 record and the No. 1 overall pick. No matter where he ends up, Nebraska fans everywhere will miss him.
Another fun part about the bowl season are the contests. People organize bowl pools where someone picks who they think will win each of the bowl games. In the pool I entered, we were supposed to apply confidence points 1-34 to each pick. If you won the game you received that many points.
Lets just say this year was a rough one. It all began with Fresno State and Wyoming. UW shocked a lot of people including this guy when they won the New Mexico Bowl. I had 34 points riding on Fresno. Doomed from the beginning. My brother attends UW and he even picked Fresno. Lets just say he was worse off than I was. He went 2 for 11 through the first 13 games.
It’s funny how football works.
One thing to look forward to are the NFL playoffs. I have never been a huge fan of the NFL. I follow the Broncos a little but wouldn’t call myself a loyal fan. The Super Bowl is always fun to watch with friends and family. Usually too much food is consumed. It’s a great way to cap off the true end of the football season.
I wish someone would follow me around beginning the day after the National Championship until kickoff that first Saturday and count how many times I say “I can’t wait until college football starts.” I wouldn’t be surprised if the number reached 1,000.
Now we just sit and wait. We check team sites to see who is coming back and who is taking off early for the NFL. We watch as teams get new coaches while others let coaches go.
We check out scouting reports to see which high school prospect is the best. We watch as those prospects sign letters of intent with different schools. We tune into the scrimmages to see who will start and who will be on the second string.
Another thing we watch for is the almost certain scandal. It never fails someone always does something wrong and gets in trouble for it. Whether it be a coach recruiting illegally or a player violating NCAA rules, just wait, there will be something that pops up.
Until that opening day, we wait in anticipation. We hope our teams will be better. We ourselves set goals we hope will be reached. And we also get to get off the couch and get some exercise!
