Traveling to Haxtun Friday, Jan. 15, Lady Dragon basketball captured a big 42-27 win over the Bulldogs.
“We had a very good outing against Haxtun,” said coach Arlan Scholl. “We shot the ball better and still played very good defense.”
Dragon defense was certainly on target Friday night. “To hold a high school team to only 27 points for a game and to hold the opposing team’s top scorer scoreless is an outstanding job of defense,” said Scholl. “We continue to work hard and take pride in our defensive effort.”
Starting out with a low-scoring first quarter, HHS kicked it into high gear in the second period.
In the second quarter alone, Marissa Smith scored three of her five three-pointers in addition to two two-point shots for 13 out of Holyoke’s 20 points at halftime. The Dragons led by 11 going into the second half.
HHS kept up the momentum, outscoring Haxtun 22-18 in the second half for the 15-point lead at the final buzzer.
Holyoke shot at 34.8 percent compared to the Bulldog’s 19.6 field goal percentage.
Leading scorer for the Dragons was Smith with 19 points including five three-pointers and two two-pointers. Laura Gerk added 10 points including two three-pointers, one two-pointer and two for four from the line.
Chasity Pelle and Nora Roth led in rebounds, both with eight. Pelle also had three steals in Friday’s game.
Lady Dragon basketball travels to Ovid to face Sedgwick County Friday, Jan. 22 with games scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Scholl said the team’s upcoming game against Sedgwick County is a game that counts towards district seeding. “We are very determined to come out and compete at our highest level. I see continued improvement in our overall game and expect to go up there and get the win,” he added.
The girls also play Community Christian Saturday, Jan. 23 at NJC in Sterling with games starting at 2 p.m.
It should be noted the Holyoke/Weldon Valley game at NJC Thursday, Jan. 21 is only for the HHS boys’ basketball team.
