Two local youth traveled to Denver Tuesday, Jan. 12 to the 2010 National Western Stock Show to show their goats in the Junior Market Goat Show.
Janna Smith, 16 and Patricia Adams, 17 each took two goats to the show and received places in their respective lightweight classes. Adams took sixth place and Smith grabbed eighth and 10th.
Smith’s mother, Denise said both girls were very pleased with the outcome of their shows.
Wednesday they were in the showmanship class and had to get their goats ready for that show by clipping and grooming them. Then on Thursday was the show where judges looked at meat quality and the overall animal.
The deadline to enter was Nov. 1, 2009. Denise said they had to sign up online and present photos of the animals.
After arriving in Denver, the goats had to go through a veterinarian check and meat quality assurance class.
Adams goes to Holyoke High School and Smith attends Haxtun High School. They represented their respective FFA chapters at the show.
The grand champion in the lightweight division was a goat from Hennessey, Okla.
