The Gresham-Barlow school board in Oregon will appoint assistant superintendent Jim Schlachter to be the district’s next superintendent of schools at its Feb. 4 school board meeting. Schlachter has served as assistant superintendent for the last two years.

Schlachter grew up in Holyoke and graduated in 1974. He is the son of Lois Schlachter.

Schlachter has worked for the Gresham-Barlow School District in a variety of administrative roles for the last 10 years. Before becoming assistant superintendent in 2008, he oversaw the district’s elementary and middle schools for four years. In addition to his district-level administrative experience, Schlachter served as principal of two Gresham-Barlow middle schools—he was principal of Gordon Russell Middle School from 2000 to 2004 and principal of Damascus Middle School from 1997-2000.

In addition to his administrative experience, Schlachter has 15 years of teaching experience. He has taught high school science and middle school math and science. He was named “Middle School Teacher of the Year” in 1991 by the Oregon Science Teachers Association. Schlachter’s administrative work and classroom experience, when combined, is more than 31 years of experience in education.

Schlachter will take over the helm of the Gresham-Barlow School District July 1.

The Gresham-Barlow School district is located east of Portland, Ore., and serves 11,600 students in grades K-12. The district has 19 schools.
