Dragons take 2 nice wins PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt
With back-to-back wins at Haxtun and Sedgwick County Dec. 19 and 20, the HHS Lady Dragon varsity basketball team advanced to a 4-2 record for the season.
“These were two very good wins for our team,” said coach Arlan Scholl, noting they needed to pick it back up and play well after the disappointing two-point overtime loss to Akron Dec. 16. “I am continuing to see progress with this team,” Scholl added.
He pointed out it was good to get a victory at Sedgwick County, over a district playoff opponent. “We need to set the tone when we play these teams that will be in our district tournament,” said Scholl.
Looking ahead, Scholl said he hopes the girls don’t lose this winning momentum going through the long Christmas break because the Jan. 9 and 10 games with Merino and Wiggins will be ones that count for district seeding.

Holyoke 57, Haxtun 36
Holyoke set the tone early for a win at Haxtun Friday, Dec. 19 and accomplished that, 57-36.
Holyoke outscored the Bulldogs in each of the four quarters, kicking off the varsity contest with a 17-10 first-quarter lead. Katie Hoffner was on fire, scoring nine of Holyoke’s first-quarter points, including one three-point basket.
For the game, Hoffner was three for six from behind the arc and also scored four two-point baskets.
Continuing to widen their lead each period, the Dragons finished with a 21-point advantage in the Phillips County Shoot-out.
Holyoke hit 23 of 60 field goal shots for 38 percent, while the Bulldogs shot with 24.5 percent accuracy, making 13 of 53.
From the free-throw line, both teams made eight. Holyoke finished with 47 percent accuracy, while Haxtun made only 36 percent of their free throws.
Hoffner led Holyoke’s scoring drive with 17 points. Also scoring in double digits were Phawn Carper and Nora Roth, with 11 apiece.
The Bulldogs were paced by Macey Pierce’s 12-point game.
The visiting Dragons outrebounded Haxtun 34-27, led by Maddie Starkebaum’s 10. Roth pulled down six and Chasity Pelle five. Marissa Smith managed seven steals to make a difference in the Phillips County ball game.

Saturday night’s ball game at Sedgwick County was a much closer contest, with the Dragons eventually pulling off the 43-36 victory.
Makenzie Ault pumped in seven points in the first quarter to lead the Cougars to a 9-8 advantage. But the Dragons came back in the second to dominate 13-7 to take a five-point halftime lead, 21-16.
The HHS advantage was reduced to four points after three quarters of action, but a strong 16-13 final period secured a seven-point Dragon win.
For the second straight night, Hoffner scored 17 points to lead the Lady Dragons in their win. At Sedgwick County, she made two two-pointers, three three-point baskets and four free throws. Starkebaum added 11 for HHS.
