Dear Editor:

I was deeply sorrowed to read that Holyoke was discontinuing some of the sirens. I realize that they can be loud, and no, I do not live there anymore. But I miss them and wish I could hear them.

They are part of the charm that makes Holyoke the great little town that it is. They are part of Holyoke’s history. I would like to strongly urge you to preserve this tradition. Maybe you could turn them down a notch for the non-emergency times. I live in an area that is surrounded by history.

Development, newcomers or people just wanting change have destroyed some of this history only to discover later they wish they had left it alone. Please do not make this mistake.

Like I said, I do not live there any more, but I would if I could make a living doing what I do. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I know I am not alone in hoping the sirens continue. Holyoke, please keep on being the great little town that you are.
