Agenda Club hosts senior breakfast one last time PDF Print E-mail

Just about everyone who graduated from Holyoke High School can remember attending their senior breakfast, and it’s all because of the hard work of a special group of women.

For four decades, Holyoke’s Agenda Club has organized the senior breakfast for HHS graduates. Not only do the seniors get to enjoy a wonderful meal, it’s also a unique time for them to gather and share memories before graduation.

Thirty-two HHS seniors came together for the breakfast Friday morning, May 14.

“It’s a fun, fun time for us,” said Agenda Club member Mary Belle Rafert. “I think it’s the highlight of our year.”

After the meal, a slide show is presented to the seniors. There is no mistaking the laughter and giggles that come when the seniors try to guess their classmates based on a baby photo and a clever poem.

Rafert, who collects newspaper clippings about each student through the years, takes time to write the poem that highlights the graduate’s interests or accomplishments.

Barb Neugebauer helps prepare the slide show with baby pictures provided by the parents.

While the senior breakfast is a special time for the women of Agenda Club, the 14 current members have recognized it is time to pass on the tradition to someone else. They are looking for a group to take over the annual meal because they believe it’s a tradition that should carry on for many years to come.

From what they can remember, the first senior breakfast was served in 1931 by the Delphian group. Rose Reimer hosted the breakfast in her home for her son Dale’s graduating class.

That group continued the breakfast until Agenda Club took over in 1971.

Besides the senior breakfast, Agenda Club supports the Dragon’s Wagon Preschool and Baby Bear Hugs. They have also sponsored the Fair Queen’s Luncheon and Decorate a Veggie contest at the Phillips County Fair in years past. Since 1966, the women have sold brooms to fundraise for activities.

Agenda Club was originally organized as a federated club in 1947 and continues to meet monthly.
