Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Area runners are invited to help Imperial, Neb. celebrate its 125th birthday this weekend, and enjoy some early morning running, as well.

Early this week, 32 people were preregistered for the Saturday, July 3, 5K, mile run/walk and kids’ half-mile races to be held in Imperial.

People who didn’t preregister can still compete in any of the races, according to Jo Leyland of Imperial’s 125th planning committee.

Runners need to check in starting at 6:30 a.m. Saturday before the races under the large celebration tent to be set up on Imperial’s main street (between 7th and 8th Streets).

The races will start with the kids’ half-mile at 7:15 a.m, followed by the 5K and mile events at 7:30 a.m.

Mark and Renae Bottom of Imperial are coordinating the event with help from the cross country and track teams. Prizes will include medals to winners and there will be drawings for other prizes afterwards under the tent.

All registrants will receive a T-shirt with the 125th celebration logo.

Information on the races and all of the 125th celebration events this weekend in Imperial are on the city’s website: Click on “quasquicentennial celebration.”
