Holyoke girls bolt ahead for huge 63-point win PDF Print E-mail

 Holyoke Lady Dragons set the tone early for a solid 78-15 win against Love Christian at NJC Tuesday, Jan. 20.
 HHS came onto the court aggressively, as the team was well into double digits after the 28-4 first quarter of play. The Holyoke girls kept up their momentum throughout the first half.  
 In the third quarter they continued to dominate scoring 10 baskets. In this quarter, Love Christian could not get past Holyoke’s defense, and did not score a single basket.
 The Dragons polished up the game, scoring 17 points in the final quarter. Marissa Smith scored her third three-pointer for the game in this quarter.
 Both Smith and Katie Hoffner landed a combined 12 points from behind the arc. Smith had three three-pointers and Hoffner had one.
 Coach Arlan Scholl said, “This was a good game to work on some of our offensive and defensive sets. He commented, “It also allowed us to get some varsity game time in for some of our younger players.”
 Holyoke hit 30 of 60 field goal shots for 50 percent, while the opponents only shot at 13 percent accuracy, making six of 45.
 From the line, Holyoke was 14 for 19 for 74 percent, Love Christian was one for four at the charity line, making 25 percent. Maddie Starkebaum, Phawn Carper and Hoffner were all two for two from the line.
 Starkebaum led Holyoke’s scoring drive with 14 points. Also scoring in double digits were Smith with 11 and Mallory Bennett and Nora Roth with 10 apiece.
 Holyoke clearly outrebounded the opposing team 39-18, led by Starkebaum, who has been a top rebounder for the team all season. Chasity Pelle pulled down six and Molly Fricke five.
 Holyoke also had twice as many steals as Love Christian. Holyoke had 16, and Love Christian had eight.
 Looking ahead, Scholl said, “It was nice to get to play in the NJC facility. It allows us to get a feel for the court as we will be competing in district play there in February.”
