Written by Sharlene Hart

Lady Dragon basketball took its third straight win, hosting Sedgwick County Friday night, Jan. 23. After a rocky start to the game, the girls fought back to get a good solid 60-46 win.
The victory boosted the Lady Dragon record to 8-3 on the season. The Dragons have won six of their last seven games.
Struggling to get by the Lady Cougars in the first quarter of play the Dragons were down by seven points going into the second quarter. By halftime they took advantage of their home court and led by three. Shelby Beavers was  two for two in free throws in the second quarter of play.
In the third quarter, Holyoke girls increased their lead to 40-33. Carper racked up three two-pointers.
Rounding off the game fiercely, the Lady Dragons added  20 points to the score board, taking the 14-point win. In the fourth quarter Smith added nine points to the score board.
Coach Arlan Scholl said, “Their never-give-up attitude brought them through to a win.” The team got some defensive rebounds in this game and found the fast break for some transition baskets, which helped them out. “We have been missing that part of our game this year,” added Scholl.
Leading the Dragons to victory, Marissa Smith scored 20 points. She was three for three from the charity line and swooshed a three-pointer from behind the arc. She also had four steals.
Phawn Carper also scored in double digits with 16. She dominated the boards with 18 rebounds.
Overall, Holyoke hit 25 of 48 field goals for a 52 percent shooting average, while Sedgwick County made 17 of 56 for 30 percent.
From the line, the Dragons performed well, making nine of 12 free thows for 75 percent. The Cougars made 11 of 19 from the line, for 58 percent.
In addition, the Dragons outrebounded the Cougars 33-27.
Winning this game marks Holyoke’s second victory over Sedgwick County this season. Earlier in the season the girls beat the Cougars 43-36.
Coach Scholl added, “We still need to work on handling pressure on our ball handlers, but we will continue to work on these weak areas.”
