Girls’ basketball suffers two losses PDF Print E-mail

 The Holyoke Lady Dragon varsity basketball team had a tough weekend with two losses to Wray and Burlington on Feb. 6 and 7.

 “The girls played very hard in both games but couldn’t come away with a win,” said coach Arlan Scholl. While there were positive aspects of each game, Scholl noted they struggled with making some k

ey shots during each game.

 e pointed out the team is improving, and he is pleased with the progress they have made so far this season.

 he Lady Dragons find themselves in a tough series of games. Scholl said it’s not often they play Wray, the number one ranked 2A team, on Friday and then turn around to play Caliche, the number one ranked 1A team, the following Thursday.  “This level of competition should continue to help our team improve for our post season run,” said Scholl.

Holyoke 28, Wray 43

 acing the Wray Eagles at home on Friday, Feb. 6, Holyoke took a tough loss, 28-43.

 ray dominated the game, outscoring Holyoke in three of the four quarters. The Dragons came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 12 points over Wray’s 10, but could not gain the lead that Wray had established at the start of the game.

 t the free throw line, Wray shot with 92 percent accuracy landing 12 out of 13 free throws.

 addie Starkebaum led the Dragons in total scoring with 15 total points accounting for 

over half of Holyoke’s final score. She landed six two-point baskets as well as 100 percent of her three free throw shots. Of the Dragons’ 20 points in the second half, Starkebaum scored 13 points.

 he Dragons rebounded 17 balls with Starkebaum leading with six and Smith coming in with five. Smith also completed two steals.

Holyoke 36, Burlington 48

 he Dragons took on the Cougers at Burlington on Saturday, Feb. 7 ending with a 36-48 loss. 

 urlington started with an 8-7 lead over the Dragons at the end of the first quarter. Holyoke dominated the second quarter with 16 points compared to Burlington’s two which gave Holyoke a 23-10 lead at halftime.

 lthough Holyoke had a strong first half, the Cougars came back to outscore the Dragons 38-13 in the second half.

 choll noted, “It was frustrating to watch our 13-point first half lead disappear against Burlington. We just struggled to handle their quickness and defensive pressure.”

 hile the Dragons suffered a loss according to total points, they excelled in accuracy and rebounds.

 olyoke shot with 43.3 percent accuracy from the field, hitting 13 of 30. Burlington made 15 for 51 for 29.4 percent.

 rom the line, Holyoke was 10 for 11 for 91 percent while Burlington made only 15 out of 30 free throws for 50 percent accuracy. Carper landed five of six free throws. Starkebaum and Nora Ann Roth both shot two for two from the line.

 he Dragons outrebounded the Cougars 23-20, led by Roth with seven. Starkebaum pulled down six and Katie Hoffner four. 

 arper and Starkebaum led the team in scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively.

 urlington’s Meagan Sullivan led the Cougars to the win with 19 total points including three three-point shots.

 n upcoming action, the Lady Dragons will meet Caliche at home on Thursday, Feb. 12 with games starting at 4 p.m. The varsity team will also travel to Fleming on Saturday, Feb. 14 for a 3 p.m. game.
