Newly elected Joe Kinnie jumped on board this month in his new role as Phillips County Commissioner.

Bud Biesemeier is now chairman of the board while Jerry Beavers and Kinnie will act as co-chairmen, they reported at their Jan. 31 meeting.

While the commissioners welcomed Kinnie, they also noted much appreciation for former commissioner Susan Roll Walters.

With the reorganization of the county Jan. 1, county administrator Randy Schafer said other county boards are close to being finalized, but a couple positions still need to be filled.

Commissioners noted they will be helping at the pancake breakfast Friday, Feb. 4 in support of the Homesteaders Park playground project. Not only will they help serve the meal, they will also be on hand to answer any questions the public may have about the plans for the universally accessible playground.

Schafer reiterated that as the county reapplies for a Great Outdoors Colorado (COGO) grant, they need more public input about the playground as well as firm pledges for matching funds.

He added they have also been working on the application for an enhancement grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) for lighting and other miscellaneous items.

Monday, Jan. 31 the board held a hearing for the county’s supplemental budget. It was approved as submitted.

Phillips County is hoping to supply new computers for the courthouse. As technology advances, Schafer said they try to replace the computers every five to six years.

Right now they have received a bid from Computers Etc. at a cost of $769 for each individual unit with a plan to replace 12-15 computers.

A 2010 Ford Crown Victoria has been purchased for the Phillips County sheriff’s office. After adding on a light bar, prisoner cage and canine cage and trading in a 2003 Dodge Durango, the cost was $20,000.

The county also took bids and sold a 1994 Chevy pickup for $1,106.

Additionally, Phillips County’s Taste of Ag event has been postponed, announced Schafer. He said organizers are looking to have it in January 2012 instead of cramming it into the schedule this spring.

“We’re not abandoning the event,” said Schafer. They want to allow plenty of time for planning so they can be sure to fill the building and give Taste of Ag the attention it deserves.

 

Other business

In other business in the month of January, commissioners:

—approved nine gas well permits for Black Raven around the Amherst area.

—approved a subdivision exemption for Byron Kramer at NE of NW 1/4 of Section 19, Township 6, Range 42.

—purchased a tract of land in Paoli north of the railroad tracks for gravel and rock stockpile storage.

—renewed a contract with Jamie Poe for janitorial work.

—donated $150 to both the Holyoke and Haxtun post prom parties.

—noted three county employees attended a three-day Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) seminar in Pueblo.
