There will be no break for Dragon athletes who play both basketball and baseball this school year. Holyoke’s baseball season is already beginning this weekend with a junior varsity doubleheader at Yuma on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity’s first home games, a doubleheader, against Sedgwick County on Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m.
Practice for the season started Feb. 17 for those not on the basketball team, and head coach Kyle Bules is hoping the others can make the quick transition between seasons in only a few days of practice.
“It’s especially tough to get my pitchers ready that quickly,” he said.
Assisting Bules for the second straight season is John Ortner and volunteer Marcus Kammer. Returning letterwinners include seniors Austin Tharp, Brandon Price and Brett Gerk; juniors Ryan Baumgartner and Logan Krueger; and sophomore Brian DeBoer.
Also returning to the team this year are junior Shaun Beck and sophomore Dustin Carrick.
Joining the lineup will be seniors Erik Scharin and Sheng Xeng; juniors Matt Harvey and Kalob Weaver; sophomores Chris Bieber and Preston King; and freshmen Reid Baumgartner, Austin Killin, Coleton Spitz and Brent Vasa.
Managers are eighth grader Phillip Beck and fourth grader Kaide Bules.
