'My Fair Lady' on HHS stage March 27-28 PDF Print E-mail
Written by April Peregoy
My Fair Lady will be on stage at the HHS auditorium Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets are available at the door.
A hit film in 1964, My Fair Lady is the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Pygmalion, that had played successfully on Broadway from March 15, 1956 to 1962.
Shaw’s plot was derived from Latin poet Ovid’s story (in the Metamorphoses) about a character named Pygmalion who fell in love with a beautiful ivory statue of a woman. In later Greek tradition, his prayers to Venus that the beloved statue—Galatea—would come to life, came true so that they could marry.
This gloriously witty adaptation is about Professor Henry Higgins, who takes a bet from Colonel Pickering that he can transform unrefined, dirty Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady, and fool everyone into thinking she really is one, too!
He does and thus, young aristocrat Freddy Eynsford-Hill falls madly in love with her. But when Higgins takes all the credit and forgets to acknowledge her efforts, Eliza angrily leaves him for Freddy, and suddenly Higgins realizes he’s grown accustomed to her face and can’t really live without it.
Directing the spring musical this year are Drew Peregoy and Pat Wiebers. This weekend’s production is the second HHS play Peregoy has directed and his first musical. “The kids have worked real hard and it’s been a great first year,” said Peregoy of his musical directing experience so far. “I think people will enjoy it.”
