For the Holyoke Lady Dragon basketball team, the outlook is bright as they kick off the 2011-12 winter basketball season this week.
“With five returning letterwinners and a good solid cast of talented up-and-coming players, the Lady Dragons look to be competitive this year,” said coach Arlan Scholl. “As always, our league and district tournament will be tough competition, but these girls have always worked hard to meet the challenges.”
Scholl, who has coached HHS girls’ basketball for 11 years, said the team is instituting a new offensive system, and they look forward to implementing it this season.
“Speed and pushing the ball up the court is still one of our main objectives,” he noted. Four of the five 2010-11 starters graduated last year, so it may take some time to completely gel as a team, said Scholl, but everyone is working hard in practice. The Lady Dragons have a good balance of size and speed, with four players all around the six-foot level.
Returning letterwinners for the HHS girls’ basketball team include seniors KrisAnna Ham and Laura Gerk, juniors Chandler Gerk and Erin Vieselmeyer and sophomore Maddie King.

“We have created a tradition of quality girls’ basketball here in Holyoke with seven appearances in the State Tournament in the past eight years and hope to continue to build on that success this season,” said Scholl. “We continue to have the greatest fans in the area and look forward to seeing and hearing you at all of the games.”
Joining Scholl on the coaching staff are Kate Shoemaker and Harvey Eurich. Rachel Schneider will serve as student manager.
Twenty-nine girls have spent the last few weeks gearing up for their first game in Haxtun Friday, Dec. 2 with games beginning at 4 p.m. The next day they travel to Idalia for 3 p.m. games.
A girls’ C team game is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5 in Imperial, Neb.
The Lady Dragons’ home opener is set for Friday, Dec. 9 when the girls face Yuma at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 is another home match against Brush beginning at 4 p.m.
