Twenty-eight Holyoke elementary students grabbed books for Partners in Education (PIE’s) second reading contest during the month of November.
Students spent the month keeping track of their minutes on special calendars. The 28 students read for a total of 27,023 minutes, or 450.38 hours or 18.77 straight days.
Second-graders lead the way with 5,537 minutes of reading.
It took a little work, but organizers finally arranged the winners of Partners In Education (PIE’s) reading contest to spell the word “READ” Monday, Dec. 12. A total of 28 Holyoke elementary students read for 27,023 minutes during the month of November as part of the contest.
Those participating in the contest were kindergartners Ty Guthrie, Chase Johnson, Katelyn Kropp and Braxton Speicher; first-graders Kevin Hermosillo, Elby Kropp, Isaiah Rahe and Ashton Robles; second-graders Tristen Ferguson, Diego Jimenez, Ethan Johnson, Josie Schlachter and David Speicher; third-graders Ashley Rahe and Jesse Vasa; fourth-graders Lauren Bergner, Lane Guthrie, Isaiah Hatton, Emily Jelden, Morganne Kumm, Xander Speicher and Seth Watson; fifth-graders Andrea Becerra, Ashlyn Churchwell and Kyra Loutensock; and sixth-graders Taylor Hendrix, Anna Jelden and Jair Jimenez.
Prizes were presented to the top two in each class. Winners include: kindergartners Braxton Speicher, 1,920 minutes and Ty Guthrie, 1,232; first-graders Kevin Hermosillo, 1,445 and Ashton Robles, 830; second-graders David Speicher, 1,920 and Josie Schlachter, 1,385; third-graders Ashley Rahe, 1,564 and Jesse Vasa, 270; fourth-graders Xander Speicher, 2,040 and Morganne Kumm, 850; fifth-graders Kyra Loutensock, 3,093 and Ashlyn Churchwell, 1,112; and sixth-graders Jair Jimenez, 1,644 and Taylor Hendrix, 723.
