Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt

Broc Pelle was named Outstanding Wrestler, four other Dragons were place-winners and the HHS team took fourth place at the Banner County tourney in Harrisburg, Neb. Saturday, Dec. 10.

The reroute from the Holyoke tournament last weekend provided great experience for Dragon wrestlers.

“For this time of year, it was a super tournament for us,” said coach Jack Garrison.

Fourteen teams competed Saturday, with Holyoke sending nine varsity and two jayvee wrestlers. The tournament was set up in pools, where only the varsity wrestlers’ wins counted for team points.

Pelle was undefeated in his first-place finish at 170 lbs. and was also selected Outstanding Wrestler of the tourney. Mark Edmonds went 5-0 to win the 132-lb. class.

Parker Redfern finished second at 160 lbs. with a 2-1 record for the day; Jesus Hermosillo, 2-3, fourth at 182 lbs.; and Dylan Kotch, 3-2, fourth at 220 lbs.

Coach Garrison pointed out Spencer Kotch and Astolfo Rojo were both 4-1 for the day, but because their losses were early they didn’t place in the pool tournament set-up.

Garrison said the team is coming along well. He added some younger wrestlers got some wins and looked good. The team is starting to get confidence and wrestle well.

Everyone available got to go to Banner County. The team was without Nick Ortner and several others who are injured.

Garden County won Saturday’s tourney with 149 points, followed by Lingle-Ft. Laramie 123, Sutherland 87, Holyoke 80, Sedgwick County 76, Kimball 55, Bayard 52, Crawford 34, Torrington JV 34, Hyannis 32, Hemingford 26, Banner County 15, Minatare 10.5 and Wray JV 0.

Upcoming action

This weekend, the Dragons will compete in the 13th Annual Old Chicago Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17.

Coach Garrison said they’re trying to get some of the varsity and the JV wrestlers into another tournament Saturday.
