Holyoke girls let Saturday game slip away to Wray PDF Print E-mail
Written by Darci Tomky

Despite last week’s snow, Holyoke took on Wray at home Saturday, Feb. 4. Unfortunately, the Eagles pulled off a 58-48 win over the Dragons.

“The girls played hard, and we had the opportunities to win the game against Wray, but we had some inopportune turnovers and missed shots that just did not allow us to get the win,” said coach Arlan Scholl.

The Lady Dragons started off with a 17-13 lead over Wray at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles picked up the slack in the second, tieing the game at 27-27 at halftime.

Holyoke tried to hold on in the second half, but the lead slipped away from them, giving Wray the 10-point advantage at the end of the game.

“There was definitely no lack of effort by each player,” said Scholl. “I felt like we had a great team effort with very balanced scoring.”

Sophomore Maddie King led the team with 12 points followed by Chandler Gerk and Laura Gerk, each adding 11 points.

In free throws, Laura Gerk shot five for five from the line with Chandler Gerk shooting three for four.

Adding to her double-digit scoring, King brought down an impressive 13 rebounds for the Dragons. She also had six steals and four blocks against the Eagles Saturday.

Nearing the end of the season, Scholl said the team is showing steady improvement, and he hopes to build on that improvement each game from now to the district tournament.
