|Edmonds to wrestle in Senior Nationals|
|Written by Holyoke Enterprise|
HHS senior and three-time state champion wrestler Mark Edmonds will be competing in the Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. March 28-April 1.
This is the event where the top eight place finishers are recognized as High School All-Americans.
Edmonds competed in the Sophomore Nationals two years ago and looks forward to returning to the Senior Nationals.
Having signed last fall to wrestle for Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., Edmonds was encouraged by Bucknell head wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger to compete in the upcoming Senior Nationals. Bucknell coaches plan to attend the prestigious event.
Edmonds, who just won his third straight Colorado state championship, will enter the 128-man bracket in the 132-lb. division.
There will be live webcasts of the National High School Coaches Association Nationals on NHSCA.com via the high school television network.
Freshman Nationals, Sohomore Nationals and Junior Nationals are scheduled March 28-30 in Virginia Beach, Va.
Edmonds is seeking sponsors to help with his trip expenses to the high-profile tournament.
At the 2011 NCAA Division I National Championships, nine of the 10 champions had competed at High School Nationals.
Last year’s High School Nationals field boasted 421 state titles and 531 state placewinners. There were eight four-time state champions, 29 three-time state champions, 80 two-time state champions and 142 one-time state champions.
To compete in Senior Nationals, one must fit one of the following criteria:
—state champion during high school career (exceptions—top eight in California or top four in New York, New Jersey, Indiana and Pennsylvania).
—NHSCA All-American at freshman, sophomore or junior nationals.
—top four at the U.S. Open (during freshman through junior year).
