“Train like you are second and race like you are first.” Thirty-one HHS athletes are looking to run faster, jump higher and throw farther as they embark on the 2012 track and field season.

“We are a pretty young squad, so I look forward to getting to know the athletes and helping them reach their goals,” said head coach Sandra Rahe. “In the first couple weeks I have seen a great attitude and work ethic by all of the athletes, and it just makes practice a lot of fun.”

Assisting Rahe on the coaching team is Luke Thomas, who is focusing on distance and throws, and Kelsey Reimink, who is helping with sprints and hurdles. Rahe will focus on jumps and relays this year.

“Luke and Kelsey are very knowledgeable, and I anticipate all athletes improving their skills and getting better each week,” said Rahe.

This year’s boys’ team is stronger than in the past, noted Rahe, and she looks forward to seeing what some of them can do. Alex Quintana will be leading the team as the only returning senior. “He already looks very strong, and I expect him to have a great season,” said Rahe.

Returning letterwinners are senior Alex Quintana; juniors Lindsay Helgoth, Cierra Prelle and Matt Golden; and sophomores Shobi Burris, Jacinda Krueger, Audi Peña, Brittney Prottsman and Ryan Parker.

Joining them on the HHS track team are seniors Gabriela Chavez and Renan Barrueco; juniors Erin Vieselmeyer, Becca Weaver, José Jaquez, Ben Martinez and Chris Pell; sophomores Louise Krog-Meyer, Malena McWilliams and Meg Strauss; and freshmen Kaylee Ham, Berenice Juarez, Ana Olivas, Bianca Rodriguez, AJ Brandt, Ramon Favela, Tito Fierro, TJ Gertner, Morgan Golden, Ramiro Iniguez, Nick Ortner and Javy Rojo.

The tracksters kick off their season this Saturday, March 17 at the Brush Invitational, with events beginning at 8:30 a.m.
