HHS seniors Kristin Williamson and Zach Krueger were nominated for the 2006-07 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Moving forward with the issue of essentially protecting its citizens, Holyoke City Council granted officer Doug Bergstrom permission to attend Firearm and Armor school in Sterling. Bergstrom will then be qualified to train the other Holyoke police officers in the use of patrol rifles.

City officials will seek federal grant funds for the purchase of a new fire truck for the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department. If successful, the city could receive $180,000 to cover 90 percent of the cost for the equipment.

Holyoke City Council election has been canceled, and serving on the council will be mayor Eldon McCormick and council members Clint Goldenstein, David Nygaard and Roberta Tonsing.

Winona Rouze is among the 16 finalists named in the annual Nightingale Awards competition, a nursing award for excellence in human care.

The City of Holyoke Recreation will be starting a coed youth soccer program soon, with practices beginning April 4 and continuing through May 16.

Dr. Jim Schiefen, a general surgeon, has expressed desire to move to southwest Nebraska and establish a practice in five area hospitals, including Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke.

Colorado’s 1972 Pork All-American is Jerry Cox of Holyoke. He received the award during the American Pork Congress as Colorado’s outstanding young hog producer this year.

The Christian Teen Center, located in the rear of Holyoke Drug Store, will be open to the teenagers of Holyoke for the first time Saturday, April 1.

Holyoke Cub Scouts are putting the finishing touches on their small cars in preparation for the annual Pinewood Derby March 29. The Cub Scouts also have their annual Cub Kite Carnival of the Philowick district coming up April 1 in Fleming.

Bill’s Radio & TV shop, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. William (Bill) Mason, was moved Monday from120 W. Denver St. to the Gassert building at 230 W. Denver St.
