|Tracksters compete in Yuma, Burlington|

Beautiful weather again greeted Holyoke tracksters at their Tuesday, March 27 meet in Yuma and their Saturday, March 31 meet in Burlington.
The kids are showing a lot of improvement, said coach Sandra Rahe, and several kids are getting personal records each time they jump, throw or run. They have some work to do on form and technique in the jumps and throws, but that just takes time and repetition.
In team standings at the Yuma meet, Holyoke boys finished in fourth place with 62 points. The girls landed in ninth with 24.5 points.
At Burlington Saturday, the boys placed ninth with 32 points while the girls finished in 17th with 10.5 points.
The lone Dragon competitor to bring home first place honors from the Burlington meet was senior Alex Quintana, who claimed gold in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.00 and in the 110 meter hurdles, coming in at :16.22.
“We have several relays and a few individuals ranked in the top 18 in the state already,” said Rahe. “So we are just hoping to improve their times/distances each week to stay there.”
A new rule last year was that the top 18 athletes or relay teams in each event will be the state qualifiers. Rankings for the HHS track team can be viewed throughout the season at athletic.net.
“I am very proud of the kids that are getting outside their comfort zone and running races they haven’t done before,” said Rahe. “Track is a mental and physical battle of endurance and speed. The kids are showing great courage and strength both mentally and physically.”
