Olympic gold medalist Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner made an appearance at the high school auditorium April 29 and spoke to students about reaching their goals. The program was part of the FCCLA chapter service project “Ban Bullying.”

May 7, 1987

Dorothy Machamer will be honored May 11 at a retirement coffee in appreciation for her 21 1/2 years of service as the Holyoke Elementary School secretary.

Former Holyoke resident Bob Ewegen and his wife Yvonne will be the featured speakers at a writers’ seminar to be held May 16, sponsored by Friends of the Library.


Forty Years Ago
May 4, 1972

The “Hunger Walk,” sponsored by the Phillips County Crop Committee, will be held May 7 between Holyoke and Paoli. Participants have been collecting pledges on a per-mile basis for cash or commodities for distribution to places such as Iran and Bangladesh.

The Holyoke Board of Trustees appointed Leslie Lutze town superintendent, effective May 1. Lutze will work with Willard Bolen, current town superintendent, until Bolen’s retirement Oct. 1.

Dan Gracey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Schmidt of Holyoke, was named most valuable player for the 1971-72 basketball season at St. John’s College in Winfield, Kan.


Fifty Years Ago
May 3, 1962

Miss Velma Biddle, former student and teacher at the high school in Holyoke, was recently named Teacher of the Year by the Future Teachers of America chapter of Powell, Wyo. where Miss Biddle teaches English.

Holyoke and Wray firemen were called last Thursday afternoon to battle a grass fire in a remote area of the sandhills about 25 miles southeast of Holyoke in the Alvin district. The fire was reportedly started by lightning.

Seven members of the junior class at HHS attended the annual medical career conference in Denver Saturday under the sponsorship of the Colorado Medical Auxiliary.
