Holyoke City Council discussed the idea of a new soccer field at its May 1 meeting. A workshop to discuss the issue further was scheduled for May 15.

HHS senior athletic standout Zach Krueger was singled out last week as the Rocky Mountain News’ Athlete of the Week on Thursday, May 3 for his recent baseball accomplishments.

Rocky Mountain Sugar Growers Cooperative recently announced it has acquired Western Sugar Company from Tate & Lyle of London for $85 million, effective May 31.

Dr. Dennis Jelden of Holyoke recently filed his intent to seek a four-year term as the coroner of Phillips County.

U.S. Coast Guard Commander Doug Kaup, a 1975 graduate of HHS and the son of Marian Kaup of Holyoke and the late Hilbert Kaup, was recently honored at an award ceremony for being the Aircraft Commander of a Coast Guard helicopter that launched in the middle of the night on a search and rescue mission.

May 14, 1987

A nine-member archaeological “dig” crew will be in the area next week to complete the first excavation in the history of this county northwest of Holyoke on a piece of land owned by Schlachter Farms. The property has prehistoric American Indian remains exposed in dozens of places on the surface.

The house at 711 E. Kellogg, owned by the Heginbotham Trust, is being furnished to be used by doctors who are visiting in Holyoke from the Greeley Family Practice Center.

May 11, 1972

The Walk for Hunger held last weekend is expected to have raised well over $4,000 on the walk from Paoli to Holyoke and Haxtun.

Gov. John A. Love has appointed John L. Geist, associated with Reimer-Smith Grain Co. in Holyoke, as the non-attorney member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 13th district. He succeeds the late Henry T. Gassert of Holyoke.

Wyoming Governor Jack R. Gage will deliver the address at Holyoke High School commencement on Friday evening, May 18.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Heller, pioneer residents of the community, were honored at an open house Sunday afternoon, May 6, in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.
