A Homecoming Celebration commemorating the 70th birthday of the Assembly of God Church in Holyoke will be held Saturday, May 20.

SourceGas takes over Kinder Morgan as the local retail natural gas distribution utility.

Effective injury prevention was taught to Holyoke Elementary first- and second-graders on Friday, May 11 when the “Junglemobile,” sponsored by Melissa Memorial Hospital, visited the school.

On a 6-1 vote, Holyoke school board members voted down a partnership agreement that would have resulted in the creation of a Science and Nature Center for curriculum advancement in the local schools.

Phillips County Sheriff Scott McBee recently submitted a letter of resignation to the board of county commissioners. He will step down from his position effective May 31.

A city ordinance which will prohibit excessive trash or junk from accumulating on private property was tabled last week due to concerns that it was “too severe.”

May 16, Holyoke nurse Winona Rouze was recognized as a recipient of the Nightingale Award, which honors nurses whose contributions to human caring have gone beyond the cutting edge of the nursing profession.

Dennis Hagemann was honored at a surprise gathering at the Holyoke Post Office Monday morning to recognize him for his 30 years with the local postal service.

Twenty-three HHS students participated in the lift-a-thon held May 13. Fifteen of them obtained sponsors, with the money to be used for camps and other items not budgeted for.

Holyoke Lions Club has been named winner of the district governor’s contest as top Lions Club in district 6-E for the second consecutive year.

Last Friday night, an attempt was made to enter the safe located in the Holyoke High School principal’s office. The thief or thieves took a welder from the ag shop to attempt to cut open the safe door, but the attempt failed when the welder ran out of oxygen.

May 17, 1962

A rash of grass fires, set by lightning and spread rapidly by strong winds, swept across an estimated 4,000 acres of sandhill pastureland along the Colorado-Nebraska state line southeast of Holyoke Saturday afternoon.

Groundwork for the new Holyoke American Legion building was started Saturday by Legg Construction Company of Imperial, Neb.

Melvin Hofmeister, principal at Amherst Grade School, was guest of honor at a farewell supper last Thursday evening. He has resigned to attend college at Boulder.
