Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Three relay records fell when Holyoke swimmers took to the water Saturday, June 2 in the season opener of the Northwest Kansas Swim League.

Held in Holyoke, the opening meet featured 235 swimmers from eight teams. Holyoke earned 230 points to capture 2nd place in team standings.

Seth Watson, Emily Jelden, Lali Marquez and Demiah Hernandez teamed up to break two relay records in the 9-10 mixed competition, and coach Aly Brinkema was extremely proud of them.

They clocked a 1:08.60 to win the 100 yd. mixed freestyle relay, breaking the old record by over seven seconds. In the 100 yd. mixed medley relay, they swam a 1:24.13 to beat the old record by four and a half seconds.

The previous records in both relays were set just last year by Holyoke swimmers. In fact, Jelden and Watson were on the 2011 record-breaking teams, joined by Brenna Sullivan and Keegan Shaw.

Holyoke’s 13-14 girls’ 200 yd. medley relay team broke the 2004 record by 1.29 seconds. Lori McWilliams started the relay with the backstroke, Tara Krueger swam breaststroke, Danielle Brandt butterfly and Emily Krogmeier freestyle to clock a 2:23.34 for the new record.

The eight-year-old record that fell was also set by a Holyoke team including Hannah Newman backstroke, Shannon Bornhoft breaststroke, Robin O’Neal butterfly and Brittany Young freestyle.

Goodland won Saturday’s swim meet with 307.5 points, followed by Holyoke 230, Wray 206, Colby 152.5, Burlington 150, Oberlin 133, Flagler 27 and Oakley 23.

Coach Adria Colver noted five boys in the 9 and older divisions added valuable points for Holyoke. She said Remington Hielscher, Seth Watson, Tate Dille, Keegan Shaw, Drew Stewart, Austin Herman and Issac Brandt all swam well.

Often, teammates battled other teammates for the top places, Colver pointed out. There was lots of healthy team rivalry, she added.

Coach Brenda Krueger praised both the new swimmers and experienced kids in the 8 and under division.
