Holyoke’s Babe Ruth and Green PeeWee teams earned runner-up honors during the June 20-23 tournaments held in Ovid.
Holyoke’s Babe Ruth team entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and received a first-round bye. They took down Chappell, Neb. in the semifinals to move into the title game.
In the championship, Holyoke met up with a Haxtun team they had beaten twice during the regular season. However, this time it was the Bulldogs pulling through for a 16-5 victory, giving Holyoke the runner-up trophy.
Coach Kyle Bules said the championship wasn’t a very good game for the Holyoke squad. “We struggled,” he added. He also noted Haxtun managed to hit the ball very well which helped them win the game.
Holyoke’s PeeWee teams both captured wins in the first round June 20. Holyoke Gold downed Oshkosh, Neb. 11-1 to advance to the semifinals while Holyoke Green beat Fleming 9-5 to advance.
The gold team met up with Sedgwick County next and lost 0-5 to fall into the losers bracket where they faced Haxtun and lost 3-9 to claim fourth place.
Holyoke Green beat Haxtun 5-2 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. They faced Sedgwick County who stole a 5-2 victory and took home first place.
Holyoke’s Little League team fought for an 8-7 victory over Chappell in the first round of last week’s tournament. They then faced eventual winner Sedgwick County and lost 0-18 to move into the third and fourth place game. They met up with Oshkosh and fell 9-16 to place fourth.
