Phillips County Commissioners announced at their end-of-month meeting June 29 that the county has received a $91,316.50 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado toward the restroom facilities in the new Event Center.

Danny Vernon and his family were presented with an all-expense-paid trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. June 15-18 from Ginny’s Kids.

East Phillips County Hospital District has hired Marla Smith, a 21-year veteran of the nursing world, as the new director of nursing.

Phillips County Clerk Mary Louise Evans was recently honored for her expertise and many years of dedicated service by receiving the Michelle Burton Award from the Colorado State Association of County Clerks and Recorders.

A first-place plaque in the area of community service was awarded to Holyoke American Legion Auxiliary Unit 90 at the 67th annual department convention held June 25-28.

Sherri Brewer, a Holyoke High School standout volleyball player, ended her high school athletic career by competing in the Class A All-State volleyball games held June 17.

July 6, 1972

Mrs. Norman Beck of Holyoke, was presented the master angler’s award by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for landing a five-pound, 9-ounce striped bass on June 6 at Lake McConaughy.

In a major expansion move which will result in the largest savings branch system in the state of Colorado, Majestic Savings and Loan Association was merged with Sterling Savings and Loan Association on July 1.

July 5, 1962

Fire of unknown origin burned two or three small holes in the roof of Holyoke Cafe Friday night before being extinguished by firemen. The fire reportedly started from the outside, but the manner in which the blazes were started could not be explained.

The most valuable farms in northeast Colorado are in Phillips County, according to figures compiled by the Colorado and U.S. departments of agriculture.

The former O’Neal-Walrod building at the southwest corner of Holyoke’s main intersection was razed Tuesday to begin construction of the Sterling Savings and Loan Association building.
