Holyoke Junior High football players will begin their season Monday, Aug. 27 when they host Yuma at Max Bernard Field at 4 p.m. Both A and B team games will be played.
Players hit the practice field much earlier this year. They usually don’t touch the cleats to the grass until the first day of school, but with games falling much earlier, head coach Corey Zeiler and assistant Luke Thomas have been busy preparing the team.
Zeiler said he hoped to see a few more players join the team once students were back in school Wednesday. As of Monday, Aug. 20, 10 eighth-graders and 11 seventh-graders were on the roster.
Players include eighth-graders Tyler Camblin, Zachary Churchwell, Austin Herman, Gunnar Kroeger, Dylon Lousberg, Brendan Mayden, Wyatt McCallum, Hunter Razo, Alex Strauss and Tristan Sullivan.
Seventh-graders on the roster are Trey Bennett, Keith Brown, Luke Krogmeier, Tyler Lamm, Tobin Moore, Holden Redman, Drew Stewart, Charlie Valdez, Michael Voigt, Jarrett Woodhead and Natray Peregoy.
Following next Monday’s home game against Yuma, the team will travel to St. Francis, Kan. Thursday, Aug. 30 for an A game (five quarters); travel to Sterling Thursday, Sept. 6 for A and B team games; host Burlington Thursday, Sept. 13, A and B; travel to Wray Thursday, Sept. 20, A (maybe B); and host Brush Tuesday, Sept. 25, A and B.
