Courthouse steps are under repair PDF Print E-mail
Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Dust filled the air in front of Phillips County Courthouse Monday, Sept. 10 as a county crew began removing the steps leading up to the west entrance. Mike Salyards of District 3 is serving as the foreman with the help of Garold Roberts. County administrator Randy Schafer said they received a State Historical Fund grant to pay for the project. Over the past few years, Phillips County has bid the project out, but bids they got back were too high, so the county has decided to take the project on itself.

Former county employee Jay John has experience with concrete and has agreed to help the county replace the steps. Roughly three years ago, decorative rock was applied to the steps to help cover some cracking. Schafer said the upkeep of the rock was difficult so they decided to replace the steps altogether. Since the building is registered on the National Historic Registry, the steps must be restored back to exactly the way they were.

Schafer said they don’t have an exact completion date but guessed the project would take a couple of weeks. For the time being, the public is asked to use the east door or enter through the south door into the county clerk’s office.
