Holyoke’s junior high football team played host to Burlington Thursday, Sept. 13 and split games with the Cougars.
For the second time this season, Holyoke’s eighth-grade team won in overtime. They beat Burlington 14-6 in the extra period.
Alex Strauss ran in a five-yard touchdown in overtime and Brendan Mayden punched in a two-point conversion to give the Dragons a 14-6 lead. Zach Churchwell intercepted a Burlington pass on their overtime try to seal the win.
Midway through the second quarter, Gunnar Kroeger intercepted a Cougar pass which helped set up the only touchdown during regulation for Holyoke. Kroeger connected with Brenden Kage for a 57-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good.
Burlington scored in the fourth quarter and the Dragon defense held them out on the two point conversion which helped force the overtime period.
Coach Corey Zeiler said the entire game was a defensive battle and the Dragons played very well.
Holyoke’s seventh-grade team lost a tough 0-6 game. The game consisted of two 10-minute halves.
Zeiler said the defense for Holyoke really stepped up. The offense still has some things to work on to improve.
Zeiler said Charlie Valdez had a great game for the Dragons. He had numerous tackles and also ran the ball well.
The Dragons are scheduled to travel to Wray Thursday, Sept. 20 for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The season will wrap up Tuesday, Sept. 25 when the team hosts Brush at 4 p.m.
