More than $1,000 was netted by the Holyoke High School volleyball team in its Pink Out promotion Oct. 13 during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year’s funds will be given to Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation to encourage women who can’t afford mammograms to apply for funding for these crucial breast cancer detection exams.

Senior volleyball player Lindsay Helgoth and her mom, Deb, coordinated the fundraiser and were pleased to donate the money locally.

Funds were raised from donations, a silent auction, a bake sale and pledges for kills and aces during the volleyball game with Burlington that afternoon.

The team was especially pleased with the community support shown as spectators donned their pink in support of the breast cancer awareness and fundraiser project.

Varsity team members entered the volleyball court through a decorated pink arch to proclaim “Fight for a Cure.” The girls threw miniature pink volleyballs into the crowd as they were introduced that afternoon.
