Holyoke School Board member Kim Killin was recently honored by the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) when she was presented the McGuffey Award for her service.
At a regional CASB meeting in Sterling Wednesday, Oct. 10, Killin was recognized as a McGuffey Award recipient, receiving an engraved apple and a certificate with her nomination information.
Five members of the Holyoke School Board, as well as Supt. Bret Miles, attended the meeting.
Killin’s nomination for the prestigious award was made by fellow board members, as written by Linda Jelden. Noting that Killin was elected to the Re-1J board in 2009, the nomination emphasized that during her tenure, she has made a tremendous impact.
“Using her background in law, Kim was instrumental in providing the direction necessary to resurrect Holyoke’s Education Foundation,” said the board in the nomination letter.
“Re-established in 2010, the Foundation has accepted over $100,000 in donations and has already contributed to school projects.
“Kim has dedicated a great deal of her personal time to organize and submit two GOCO grants to improve facilities and provide students with an all-weather track.
“Most notably, she has brought her passion for promoting a positive school climate to the board, which has resulted in the board’s goal of focusing on adult/student relationships.
“The board hopes to achieve this goal through focus groups with students and being constantly aware of the importance of this critical element to any successful school.”
The CASB McGuffey Award is designed to honor that unique board member who brings to his/her board work both the head and the heart of committed and passionate service. Each school district was invited to name one member as the winner of the McGuffey Award.
This coveted award is named after the McGuffey Readers, which were first published in 1836. After the Civil War, the McGuffey Readers were standard schoolbooks in 37 states.
The CASB website explains the McGuffey Readers were a series of seven books with stories and poems that not only taught kids reading and grammar, but also helped them develop good qualities.
