|Local businesses see growth|

Two local businesses are in the throws of expanding their operations. Powell Seed is putting the finishing touches on a brand new facility three miles east of the stoplight in Holyoke on Highway 6. Smith Wholesale is in the middle of an addition to their location at 635 W. Furry St.
Aaron Powell of Powell Seed said he outgrew the family building he had been using. He said it came to the point where he was moving stuff around way too much. The new 60x104 foot building will be used as the main warehouse for the business. There is also a 24x24 foot addition that will be used for office space.
The building was finished in September and Powell said they were planning to begin moving this week. He also noted the first shipment of seed is scheduled to arrive in a week or two.
Doug Schelling said their inventory has outgrown their space at Smith Wholesale Hardware and decided to add on. The new 2,800 square foot addition will make room for their rapidly increasing inventory.
Construction began about four weeks ago on the addition that expands south from the current location. Schelling said it’s hard to tell when things will be wrapped up. He hopes to see it done by the first of the year, but said weather and other factors play into it.
Business will go on as usual while the construction continues.
Schelling said they are seeing around 15-20 new items arrive each week and customers seem to like each one. “It’s moving,” he added.
No matter the business, it’s always nice to see expansion and growth during these tougher than normal economic times.
Holyoke’s Pride and Progress motto certainly lives up to the bill.
