Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Phillips County Players and the Peerless Theatre are pleased to present a melodrama on stage at the Peerless Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.

“Someone Save My Baby, Ruth! Or... Foil That Villain!” is directed by Penny Dockins, taking place at a Boston candy store in the late 1800s.

When lovely young widow Penny Candy and her baby, Ruth, are taken in by her Aunt Praline, owner of The Sweet Shoppe candy store, little does Penny know both love and danger lie ahead.

The villainous Sidney Swindle is determined to buy The Sweet Shoppe as part of his plan to sell the property to the city for America’s first subway system. Should Praline refuse his offer, Sidney is prepared to do away with her and her heirs in order to obtain the land at public auction!

Cast members in “Someone Save My Baby, Ruth” are pictured from left, front row, Andrea McCallum, Dani Brandt, Anastasia Conklin, Shianne Willmon and Zander Salyers; middle row, Dolly Smith, Brenda Brandt, Marcia Dalton, Ashley Sullivan and Penny Dockins; and back row, Bob Brandt, Jacob Vasa, Shanda Willmon, Kellee Salyers, Eric Conklin and Maury Kramer. Not pictured are Karen Swan and Jerry Brandt.

With the help of his beautiful but less than brilliant cohort in crime, Ada Sourball, the villain sets his evil scheme in motion. The hilarious results include the kidnapping of Baby Ruth, an attempt to burn down The Sweet Shoppe and a wild chase through the audience with the good guys pelting the villains with candy... which the audience can eat, of course!

Other characters include Penny’s new love and the audience’s hero police officer Ernest Noble, cooks Farron Heit and Cindy Grade and clerks Taffy and Toffee and their boyfriends.

Phillips County Players will have the audience eating out of their hands—literally—in this tasty theatrical treat.

Cast members are Andrea McCallum as Penny Candy, Eric Conklin as Ernest Noble, Shanda Willmon as Taffy, Kellee Salyers as Toffee, Jerry Brandt as Hubert, Jacob Vasa as Tom.

Dolly Smith as Mrs. Murphy, Dani Brandt as Minnie, Ashley Sullivan as Praline Candy, Maury Kramer as Sidney Swindle, Karen Swan as Ada Sourball, Bob Brandt as Farron Heit and Brenda Brandt as Cindy Grade.

Others in the melodrama are Anastasia Conklin, Shianne Willmon, Zander Salyers, Penny Dockins and Marcia Dalton.
