Phillips County Commissioners announced at the Oct. 31 meeting their decision to proceed with final designs for the proposed Phillips County Event Center at the fairgrounds. The Gates Family Foundation has agreed to an extension of the Nov. 1 challenge grant deadline to September 2008.

Arlan Scholl was presented a McGuffey Award on Oct. 30 at the regional meeting of the Colorado Association of School Boards in Sterling for his 10 years of service to the Holyoke School District Re-1J Board of Education.

The board of county commissioners recently received notification from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs that they have been awarded a $250,000 energy impact assistance grant to help pay for a new trash baling system at the county landfill.

Freeman “Chip” Scheunemann II of Holyoke was recognized as one of the oldest members of the Denver Apparel and Accessory Market at the market’s Oct. 19 fashion show at the Denver Merchandise Mart. Scheunemann received the highest honor since his Holyoke department store has been in business since 1899.

Travis Wingfield joins the staff of First Christian Church to work in the youth and worship departments.

HHS senior Dusty Sprague was named a Colorado state winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Nov. 12, 1987

Due to a Carl Perkins grant dealing with vocationally oriented programs, Holyoke High School has tutoring opportunities for students in federally funded vocational programs. Kim Sprague was hired by the District and works 19-20 hours per week in her tutoring role for the one-year pilot program.

For a little over six months, Dr. Randy Marsh, cardiologist, and his partner Dr. Beckman have been coming to Melissa Memorial Hospital on a monthly basis. Dr. Marsh and Dr. Beckman are associated with North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and provide 24-hour consultation services.

Nov. 9, 1972

Jeri Oltjenbruns of Amherst has been selected as one of six newly registered young Colorado voters for an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. during Inauguration week next January.

The amateur art show held at the Holyoke American Legion Hall last Sunday, sponsored by the Holyoke Community Art Guild, attracted 56 artists and 134 entries.

Nov. 8, 1962

The Holyoke Bakery was moved over the weekend from the Jack & Jill building to the building adjoining the Baldwin Motor Co. on the east, which formerly housed Suhr Implement Co., then a recreation parlor and tavern, and has been used by John D. Baldwin for storage for some time.

A Holyoke man’s car was stolen here last Thursday afternoon and was recovered about two hours later by its owner after he forced the vehicle off the road with another car.
