Bee colonies across the United States are being affected by a strange phenomenon dubbed “Colony Collapse Disorder.”

As part of the celebration for Children’s Book Week Nov. 12-18, students in Holyoke Elementary participated in a read-in Friday, Nov. 16, where everyone was encouraged to wear their pajamas, bring a pillow and cuddle up in the hallways with a good book.

Nov. 21, 2002

City officials and Tree Board members are taking a look at how to take care of the threat of Dutch Elm Disease.

The 2002 Phillips County Relay for Life placed second in the Rocky Mountain Division for the most money raised per capita in its population category, raising a total of $45,035.

Sandra Rahe was recently hired to complete the school year as Holyoke High School math teacher following Dan Watson’s death Oct. 14.

Nov. 26, 1987

Melissa Memorial Hospital and Holyoke were represented Saturday, Nov. 7 when an information booth was set up at Colorado’s first Family Practice Opportunities Fair, held at the Sheraton Denver Tech Center.

Bob Brandt Jr. of Holyoke was selected by the Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America awards program for inclusion in the 1987 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America.”

Nov. 23, 1972

Retiring Farmers Union board member Guy Poe of Holyoke was honored at the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union annual convention last Saturday for his 21 years of service on the board of directors.

The Christmas holiday season will officially open Saturday, Nov. 25 in Holyoke, with the turning on of the street decorations, and merchants will keep their stores open until 8 p.m.

Due to the snow and very wet fields, the harvest of sugar beets in the area has come to a complete stop. Prior to the first snowstorm, the harvest of sugar beets was about 92 percent complete.

Nov. 22, 1962

Lots of people attended the open house at the Ben Franklin store Tuesday evening. The store recently changed hands, having been purchased from Carmen Channer by George Sumpter.

The White estate memorial to veterans of all wars, located on the west side of the courthouse park in Holyoke, will be dedicated and accepted at a public ceremony to be held Nov. 25.
