Holyoke Lady Dragon basketball kicked off their season with a big 44-23 win over Haxtun in the Nov. 30 Phillips County shootout.
“I was pleased with our team as we played our first game,” said coach Arlan Scholl.
The Dragons outscored the Bulldogs in all four quarters, with an 18-7 lead at halftime, and the 21-point advantage at the end of the game.
Scholl noted the girls didn’t shoot the ball from the field as well as he expected, but it wasn’t bad for the first game.
Erin Vieselmeyer led Dragon scoring with 10 points including three two-pointers and four for six in free throws.
“I felt like all of our girls played hard,” said Scholl, “and our defensive effort was very good in holding Haxtun to just 23 points.”
Maddie King had 15 rebounds, six steals and two blocks for the Dragons. Audi Peña and Erin Vieselmeyer each had three assists.

“We will have a week off from games this next week, so it will give us time to fine tune some things and also spend a little more time working on our shooting,” said Scholl.
The Lady Dragons play again next Tuesday, Dec. 11 when they travel to Yuma for 4 p.m. games.
That is the first of three games in only five days—a very busy schedule before they go on Christmas break.
