Savanna Krueger of Holyoke claimed first-place honors in the VFW District IV Voice of Democracy speech contest.
Krueger gave her speech at the district meeting in Akron last Sunday, Jan. 13. Her essay has been sent on and is now competing for top honors in the state contest, which includes winners from the 13 districts in Colorado.
Also giving Voice of Democracy speeches and placing at districts were Matt Wilcox of Haxtun, second place; and Mary Lenz of Wray, third place.
While the Voice of Democracy contest is for high school students, the VFW’s Patriot Pen is an essay and speech competition for students in grades 6-8.
Patriot Pen district winner was Bethany Gibbs, with Caleb Andersen taking second and Josi Kurtzer third. All three are from Haxtun.
