Eight Holyoke High School students and one Haxtun student are practicing at the Holyoke Swimming Pool, but will compete again this season with the Sterling High School girls’ swim team, coached by Cindy Pennington. Locally, Adria Colver and Alyson (Colver) Brinkema coach on a volunteer basis for the local swimmers.
Returning letterwinners from last year’s team are senior LeAnne McWilliams and sophomore Briar Bergner. Also returning to the team are junior Nicole Brandt and sophomore Pamela McWilliams. Three experienced freshmen who have competed on Holyoke’s summer swim team have also committed to the Sterling team. They include Holyoke students Amy Krogmeier and Jordan Zeiler and Haxtun student Amber Wilkening. Additionally, senior newcomers Chelsy Gomez and Kendra Walz are competing with the swim team this season.
Competition for the Sterling team opened at Northridge Tuesday, Dec. 2. Next up is the Valley Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6. Only three home duals at the Sterling pool are scheduled this season. They will be held Monday, Dec. 15, Tuesday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 27. Coach Colver noted Holyoke had a strong graduating class of swimmers last year. However, with the remaining letterwinners and newcomers, she feels they will have a strong team. She added they will have great coverage in all strokes. “It’s remarkable to see these girls step up,” said Colver, as she looks forward to the upcoming season.
Colver is in her 20th year of coaching swimming in Holyoke. Brinkema coached swimming at Mountain View High School in Loveland. As a senior at HHS in 2000-01, Brinkema earned state champion honors in the 4A-5A 100 meter freestyle and was named 4A Swimmer of the Year. She was a varsity swimmer for the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kan., where she graduated in 2005. While there, she was an Academic All-American swimmer and was a Big 12 finalist.
