HHS senior Elisa Sagehorn was honored at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver on Jan. 17 as a recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award in the youth division.

Following a two-year refurbishing project, the WWII 37 mm anti-tank gun that used to be located at City Park is now on display in front of the City of Holyoke office at 407 E. Denver St.

Citing a desire to have more personal time with her family, Misti Redman, owner of Misti’s Mane Attractions, has decided to sell her salon to fellow hairdresser Veronica Marroquin. Redman and Marroquin will combine under Veronica’s Hair and Nail Salon. The official change of ownership takes place Feb. 1.

Jan. 30, 2003

Holyoke Recycles organized a Colorado Association for Recycling Rural Recycling Workshop at the Peerless Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Community members discussed recycling programs, marketing of collected material and encouraging volunteers to keep a recycling program viable.

Saturday, Feb. 1, Phillips County Telephone Company will begin to do business as PC Telcom. In an effort to combine the services offered by Phillips County Telephone Company, Inc. and Phillips County Communications, LLC, officials at PC Telcom have decided to market all of their services under one name.

Feb. 4, 1988

The Northeast Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services and Dragon’s Wagon Preschool in Holyoke have received a grant to establish a model program for rural Colorado by providing specialists to come into the preschool, after Bill 99-457 recently passed, requiring that services be provided for children with special needs.

After having been closed for the month of January for repairs, the Holyoke Swimming Pool was reopened Feb. 1 with Tammy Dubbert and Julie Dirks temporarily sharing management responsibilities while the city council continues to seek a full-time pool manager.

Holyoke Community Federal Credit Union was recognized in its 50th anniversary year at the annual meeting held Jan. 27 in the Holyoke High School auditorium.


Forty Years Ago
Feb. 1, 1973

Karen Goddard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Goddard of Holyoke, will participate in the Miss Colorado Teenager pageant June 8-9 at the New Albany Hotel in Denver.

The area was struck by a blizzard which started late last Friday evening. The wind-driven snow picked up momentum during the night and continued through Saturday until about 3 p.m. when the winds died down and visibility was restored.

Jeri Oltjenbruns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Oltjenbruns of Amherst, has been selected by the Colorado “Amigos de las Americas” for volunteer service in six Central and South American countries.

Jan. 31, 1963

Larry Anson, owner of one of Holyoke’s new auto parts stores, Holyoke Auto Parts, announced this week that Jerry Isaacson of Wray has been hired as manager of the business.

At the public meeting Friday evening, called by the East Phillips County Medical and Nursing Home Committee, it was concluded that a nursing home should be built with private capital.

Phillips County percentage of residents who have not completed high school is slightly higher than the average for the state as a whole, with 51.6 percent of Phillips County residents not having completed high school, compared to the statewide average of 49 percent.
