Despite a challenging game in Wray Saturday, Feb. 9, the Lady Dragon varsity basketball team came out on top for a 51-47 win over the Eagles.
Coach Arlan Scholl noted the girls fought through some adversity, and they had to work through some foul problems and an injury to one of their starters, “but the team pulled together to show our character and finish with a win.”
The girls finished the first quarter tied at 16 points. With 13 points in the second quarter, the Dragons pulled ahead by five heading into the second half.
Holyoke and Wray again tied third-quarter points, and the Eagles’ 11 points to Holyoke’s 10 in the fourth gave the Dragons a four-point win.
“I thought we worked very hard on defense but just couldn’t seem to stop Wray’s offensive attack at times,” said Scholl. “We would get up on them a little ways, and then they would continue to come back and make a game of it.”

He added that the Dragons didn’t play very disciplined against Wray’s full court press, which probably hurt them a bit in the late part of the game.
“I am still very proud and pleased with the effort these girls put forth every night,” he said.
In team stats, Audi Peña led the team with 19 points including five baskets sunk from behind the arc. Maddie King and Erin Vieselmeyer added 11 points apiece.
Erin Vieselmeyer brought down 10 rebounds, and she and King both had one block. Megan Vieselmeyer grabbed two steals and five assists.
The Dragons made 10 out of 14 free throws compared to Wray’s 20 out of 25.
The Dragons are on the road this week, traveling to Haxtun Thursday, Feb. 14 for 4 p.m. games and to Fleming Saturday, Feb. 16 for games beginning at 4 p.m.
Next week, there will be a rescheduled game with Yuma Tuesday, Feb. 19 in Holyoke at 4 p.m.
