Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt

Dragon wrestlers hosted Wray Thursday, Feb. 7 and traveled to Burlington Tuesday, Feb. 5 for dual action.

Holyoke 25, Wray 52

A moment of silence in memory of former HHS wrestling coach Larry Stroh opened the Holyoke-Wray dual Thursday, Feb. 7.

It was a good night for wrestling, with both teams having competitors in 13 weight classes. Wray’s Jake Rockwell won by forfeit at 113 lbs., the only weight class that Holyoke was open.

HHS won five matches. Nicholas Ortner at 138 lbs., Ben Martinez at 145 and T.J. Gertner at 160 all won with pins. Jesus Hermosillo took a 13-1 decision at 195 lbs., and Eric Rojo made a tremendous come-from-behind effort to win in overtime 17-15 at 106 lbs.

Coach Jack Garrison was pleased with how the Dragons wrestled, despite the fact they lost the dual. “They fought hard and tried hard,” said Garrison, and he was pleased with their conditioning.

He noted Eric Rojo’s match was one of the best he’s seen. Rojo won that on a “never-give-up” approach, said Garrison.

The Dragons are ready to bust into regionals Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16 at NJC in Sterling. Garrison feels good about where the team is in terms of conditioning, and looks forward to the last two weeks of the season.
