During the Thursday, Feb. 7 FBLA District Leadership Conference at NJC in Sterling, eight HHS members qualified for the 2013 state conference in Vail April 21-23.
Those who qualified are AJ Brandt, Jesus Hermosillo, José Jaquez, Ben Martinez, Chris Pell, Alyssa Cordova, Brett Cumming and Molly Brandt.
The theme for the conference was “Igniting Innovation—May Success be Ever in Your Future.” That is exactly what the Holyoke students did by placing 25 students in the top 10 in their events. Over 500 students from 11 different schools competed at the District IV Leadership Conference.
Students participated in competitive events and attended workshops on networking, identity theft prevention, personal saving and the “Millionaire Next Door,” a study and book by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko.
Students also competed in the annual NJC SIFE Knowledge Bowl. This was similar to a quiz bowl, but questions focused on business topics.
Two Holyoke teams competed against other schools. They demonstrated their extensive business knowledge and took first prize for the second year in a row. They received $50 that will help offset some of the costs of attending the state leadership conference.
The keynote speaker was Grant Baldwin, an engaging communicator whose message helps students prepare for life after high school. Baldwin is author of the book “Reality Check” and has spoken to over 250,000 people in 42 states.
